Upgrades to Tarajalejo Dam and Valle de la Cueva Access
The Cabildo of Fuerteventura is steadfast in its commitment to improving the island’s water infrastructure and accessibility. Recent initiatives have focused on reinforcing the Tarajalejo Dam and enhancing the pathway to Valle de la Cueva, ensuring both water management efficiency and public safety.
Reinforcement of Tarajalejo Dam
Situated at the head of the Tarajalejo ravine, the dam boasts a capacity of approximately 95,000 cubic metres. To bolster its structural integrity and ensure effective water flow during periods of heavy rainfall, a new drainage breakwater has been constructed. This addition aims to stabilise the natural drainage network, mitigating potential erosion and overflow issues.
Improved Access to Valle de la Cueva
In collaboration with the Antigua Town Council, the Cabildo has undertaken significant improvements to the pathway leading to Valle de la Cueva. Recent rainfall had rendered the route challenging for both residents and visitors. The enhancements ensure safer and more reliable access, benefiting local communities and promoting tourism in the area.
Commitment to Sustainable Water Use
Lola GarcĂa, President of the Cabildo, emphasised the importance of maintaining infrastructures such as ponds, dams, and maretas to optimise water utilisation across Fuerteventura. By preserving and upgrading these facilities, the island aims to maximise its water resources, crucial for both consumption and agriculture.
Future Outlook
These projects are part of a broader strategy to enhance Fuerteventura’s water management systems and infrastructure. The Cabildo remains dedicated to implementing measures that ensure the safety, sustainability, and prosperity of the island’s residents and ecosystems.
